March 2005

Our new logo

Sixteen Wexham ladies went off to the Pine Cliffs resort in Portugal for 3 days of golf. All seem to have enjoyed themselves despite the cool weather; in particular Anne Leach who with her partner, Sue Woodcock, had a stableford score of 52 points on the last day. Anne assures us that this was a fluke never to be repeated. Others, such as Liz Lunn and Maureen Bailey enjoyed the après golf. Liz led a rousing rendition of Hello Dolly in the hotel restaurant and Maureen did her best to promote Anglo-German relations! A big thank you to Sue Carroll and everyone who helped organise the trip.

A Question of rules

Whilst playing Greensomes player A hit her T shot into the pond on the 5th. Her partner also hit into the pond. Player A had another go and hit into the pond again. Player B managed to get over the pond and into the bunker. Player A got out of the bunker onto the green. It took 2 putts to finish. How many strokes did they take in total?Answer at the bottom of the page.

Buckinghamshire

Maria Brennan, Sue Mills and Margaret McGee entered the Ladies Open at the Buckinghamshire Golf Club on 9th March. They played in a field of 89 entrants and finished in the top 3rd. Maria said that they were made very welcome and had a very enjoyable day. The course was in excellent condition and she would recommend this as a good way to play a variety of courses. There is a folder in the ladies changing rooms with information on forthcoming open days at different clubs.

A little winter cheer

The Pope met with his cardinals to discuss a proposal from Benjamin Netanyahu, the leader of Israel. "Your Holiness" said one of the Cardinals, "Mr. Netanyahu wants to challenge you to a game of golf to show the friendship between the Jewish and Catholic faiths". The Pope thought is was a good idea, but he had never held a golf club in his hand. "Do we have a cardinal who can represent me against the leader of Israel?" he asked. "None that plays golf very well," a cardinal said. "But there is an American golfer named Jack Nicklaus, who is a devout Catholic. We can make him a cardinal; then ask him to play as your personal representative". Everyone agreed it was a good idea. The call was made. Of course, Nicklaus was honoured and agreed to play. The day after the match, Nicklaus reported to the Vatican to inform the Pope of the result. "I have some good news and some bad news, Your Holiness," said the world-class golfer. "Tell me the good news first, Cardinal Nicklaus," said the Pope. "Well, Your Holiness, I don't like to brag, but I played the best game of my life. I must have been inspired from above. My drives were long and true, my irons were accurate and purposeful and my putting was perfect. With all due respect, my play was truly miraculous". "So what's the bad news?" the Pope asked. Nicklaus sighed. "I lost by three strokes to Rabbi Tiger Woods."

Answer:

The club pros ruled that they were actually disqualified because they should have declared which player's tee shot they were taking before carrying on after the first 2 drives. If they had done this and continued alternate play they would have had a score of 8 strokes.
