JENNY POWELL CHALLENGE TROPHY
Thursday 28th July saw a new event in the Wexham calendar. The Jen Powell Challenge Trophy in memory of Jen who died suddenly in December 2003. It was well supported by teams from all sections of the Club including men, ladies, juniors and staff, which is an indication of how well loved she was by all. Jen must have been looking down on us, as despite the dire weather forecast for storms, we all played in warm dry conditions.
The juniors won the event (we hope they all enjoyed their prize of a bottle of Champagne each!) We would all like to thank Julie Kinchin for organising the event and Gill for donating the challenge shield, and look forward to this becoming an annual event.
Away Day to Stockley Park
Once again Maureen and Hilary arranged an excellent away day. We also have to thank Kay Shacklady for helping out with this one. On this occasion 15 of us went to Stockley Park and had a great day. We were very lucky with the weather, which was warm although overcast. The course was in very good condition (thanks to fairway watering we had the luxury of grass on the fairways), and the sandwiches were very good. It was lovely to see Kay Shacklady receive the prize for overall winner with Ann Breedon coming second. Sue Carroll won longest drive and Pat Fullick won nearest the pin. A big thank you to Maureen, Hilary and Kay.
Forthcoming Away Day
The next away day is to Farnham Park on 23rd August. The list is already full but you may still add your name as a reserve to the list in the ladies cloakroom.
Weekend Away
Preparations for the next golf trip are now underway. The date for this is Sunday 11th September to Tuesday 13th September.
The destination is not yet finalized but it will be within 2 hours drive of Wexham. The cost will be £180 for two nights accommodation with three rounds of golf or £110 for one night accommodation with two rounds of golf. If you are interested please add your name to the list in the ladies cloakroom, stating whether you are interested in one or two nights.
Wednesday Evening Ladies Final Night of 2005
The 31st August will be a fun night and will include the helpers who have given their time and assistance throughout the sessions.
The evening will conclude with supper.
Tickets may be bought from Sue Carroll, Anne Leach or Carol Grant at £6 each (which is inclusive of prizes and buffet supper).
Normal green fees will still apply
Golf in Spain
As holiday season is now well and truly upon us, I thought it might be interesting to include reviews of golfing destinations in the newsletter. So here goes with the first one.
I recently spent a very pleasant week in the La Manga Club in Spain.
There is plenty of choice for accommodation, bars and restaurants.
There are three great golf courses.
The West course was undergoing major renovation work while we were there so we did not play it, although we had a look at it.
It has tight tree lined fairways and from what I could see it is very scenic.
(Oh yes and by the way it is HILLY).
The South course is the longest at 5319 meters off the red tees.
Water comes into play on 15 out of the 18 holes.
The North course is shorter at 4964 meters off the red tees.
Although shorter it is much more undulating with tighter fairways and larger greens.
Both courses are beautifully maintained.
There are excellent practice facilities, academy and a well stocked pro shop.
All in all I would thoroughly recommend this destination.
